Dear Rufina:
I will send additional material--but here are some names on
the Azorean front:
1.) From 1700's tax list in Sao Miguel--new christians: Dias, Lopes, Gaspar, Mendes,
Pereiria,
DaCunha, Soares, Alvares, Medeiros
2.) On december 21, 1836, a contract was made between Francisco Moniz Pereira, Jacinto de
Camara, and Candida Vicencia Benavita (widow of another Camara)
to sell a building to a
group led by Abraham Ben Saude. That buiulding became the
"Gates of Heaven" synagogue
in Sao Miguel which was established in 1836. The founders were:
Abraham BenSaude
(who came to the island in 1819), Salom Buzaglio, Joze Azulay,
Salomao BenSaude, Izaac
Zafrany, Elias BenSAude, and Fortunato Abecassiz.
3.) The cemetery in Ponta Delgada has close to 150 grave markers. The earliest graves are
from the 1840's; the last burial appears to be 12-5-79.
Many Morrocan names; some
German around the 1940's.
4.) Golda Meir visited the island in 1921 for 12 days on her way to Israel. This was her
first
trip to Israel. (recorded in her autobiograhy).
Kind regards
