Names From the Covilha Area

NAME LIST OF PEOPLE BORN OR WHO RESIDED IN THE AREA OF COVILHA.
According to Inquisitional records of Lisbon- from Moreira’s list, Torre do Tombo
.

The first Auto da Fe of Portugal took place on the 20th of September 1540, in front of the Paco da Ribeira- today, Terreiro do Paco, in the Lisbon harbor.

The General Inquisitor was the Cardinal Infante (Prince) D. Henrique. The first name lists were only published however in1600, with the names of the condemned and reconciled. In 1543, Autos da Fe also took place in Tomar and Porto, but documents are not available. In the same year, in Lamego, an Inquisitional tribunal is created.

Now my own words, since they are a bit incendiary, feel free to remove them, it, all or in part.

Perhaps it was also like the Roman Forum, but there, the gladiators had a chance to kill the lions, in the Autos da Fe, the condemned didn’t have any chances, not even to know the names of their informants or even the reasons for their demise. In the Inquisition, it was a one sided show. To wash their hands like Pilate, the church, after finding the accused guilty for Judaising, etc, sent the condemned to the state, (it was called ‘ given to the secular arm"). That meant, burn the person. No questions, ifs or buts. It was a dark time, it was a time of intolerance, and it was a time of despair. May they rest in peace."

Before we continue, let me familiarize you with the words used and the general area:

All these condemned were from the region of Covilha, Province in Beira, and it was aggregated to the Bishopric of Guarda. This region is situated northeast of Lisbon, towards the Spanish frontier. It’s also around the highest Mountain of Portugal, Serra da Estrela or Star Mountain. They thought they were safe, so safe that a synagogue was constructed after the forced baptisms, in Gouveia. You see, they didn’t have CNN.

News took time to reach these remote regions. But the tentacles of the Inquisition reached everywhere; somehow, no matter how long it took.

Some of these people lived in other places, but the records of the inquisition shows the natural place of birth as well. Once they caught one person, the entire family was in immediate danger. They pursued, they were persistent, they had time, and the confiscation of properties and goods, which was the first thing done, kept their coffers full. So full that lavish parties were thrown for the clergy involved the day before of the Auto da Fe, and then of course on the Day of the big Festa.

Yes, the Autos da Fe, were like the mega concerts of today. Entertainment.

The Monarchs, the nobility the people all celebrated. They ate, while the human flesh burned. They joked and laughed while our ancestors burned. It was a big circus for the masses, and at the same time, a warning.

While most of Europe was getting into the Renaissance of Mankind, the Iberia peninsula was going into the dark ages. How better to terrorize the population than to burn them? The population must have viewed it as today them, tomorrow?

And the laws were posted in church portals. People became informers, it was a duty to report any of the described "so called heresies".

As you are able to see, their professions create a pattern, and so do the names.

It’s interesting to note the intermarriages. It’s the big circle of life trying not to untangle or disconnect from its original shape.

To make it simple I am translating in situ.

It is easy to identify how in the same family, parents and children, either at the same time or at different times all were called into the inquisition. All it took was one of the family, and like the domino effect, there was no escape. First jail then, Auto da Fe, more jail, then come death if one didn't repent to their liking.

It was a giant web webbed by blind witches who could only hear the words of power and property. Witnesses were called in secret; the sentenced were spoken to in secret. It's also easy to take percentages of their professions.

It's important to note, that in the area of Covilha, the big industries were the manufacturing of cloth, fabric of wool and even silk. Therefore, tanners, Shearer's, cloth fullers, dyers were in great demand. Also the wool and all its practical jobs, such as spinners, etc were in abundance. Mostly the women did such jobs at home.

The area of Serra da Estrela which looms big and strong over Covilha, is the area mostly well known in Portugal for shepherds, lamb and goats.

It's still today called the Manchester of Portugal.

A village then, a big and prosperous city again today, and so many others like Fundao.

In Covilha last month I attended a lecture given by Prof. Maria Antonieta Garcia, a most distinguished and knowledgeable person on the subject of new Christians and Jews in the area. My thanks to her for the excellent book she wrote on the subject and from which the names above I copied and translated.

The Book which I highly recommend is only in Portuguese.

-Fios- Para um Roteiro Judaico da Covilha. By Maria Antonieta Garcia published by Universidade da Beira Interior. Covilha, Portugal.
