SANTO - SANTOS

SANTO was the Portuguese spelling for the Hebrew SHEM-TOV, a common Jewish name, that means ... "GOOD NAME"

In "TEMPO DOS JUDEUS", viz. before the forced conversion, when they had to spell the name Schem-Tov in Portuguese documents, they wrote SANTO.

PS- Just out of curiosity, one of Barros Bastos' pupils, by the name of JOAO BATISTA DOS SANTOS, used to sign in Hebrew YOHANAN KADOSH. But without any connection whatsoever with the previous name of his ancestors...

I quoted old documents available only for consultation at the National Archives of Torre do Tombo, Lisbon. They are currently quoted for specific cases in the literature.
