THE
NOGUEIRA FAMILY
by Surea and Carlos Bandeira de Mello
Nogueira: The name derived from the Latin word nucaria, meaning nut The tree came from
Europe, from Juglandaceas family (Juglans regia) This tree (10 to 40 meters in height and
100 to 400 years old) has tidy flowers lying in long and pendent ears whose fruits are the
christmas nuts. The fruits are delicious and enjoyed by many. The hard wood is very good
once polished and used for furniture manufacturing.
The name Nogeira and Nogueres (from the French word) is related to several locals from
Portugal calling Nogueira). The Nogeira name was known since 1678. In France the name
first time appears around 1787 Isaac Nogueyra from Bayonne.
There is a tragic history related to the Negueyra name in 1680, two hundred years after
the Spanish Inquisition. In a Big "Auto da Fe" Act of Faith , made with
pomp and celebration in honor of the marriage between the young Spanish King Carlos II and
French princess Maria Luisa de Orleao, niece from Luis XIV. Together 86 chosen victims of
the 'gala' was a teenage (17-old) marrana- Francisca Negueyra. Before the fire
condemnation she claimed "Have mercy oh Queen! How can I renounce the faith I sucked
together with my mother milk?" The Queen remained silent. There was no pardon for
her. Then, the sentence was read and the execution started when Carlos II lit the fire.
